The most valuable Scottish Premiership starting XI - Celtic and Rangers dominate
The Scottish football season finished with Celtic clinching the double after beating rivals Rangers 1-0 at Hampden. It was far from a classic but Adam Idah scored a dramatic last-minute winner after capitalising on a Jack Butland mistake to send the Celtic fans into ecstasy.
It wasn't all plain sailing for Brendan Rodgers on his return to Parkhead after enjoying complete dominance during his first spell at Celtic but he ultimately finished the season with two trophies. Rangers' inability to beat Celtic across five meetings prove costly as they spurned the advantage in the title race as Celtic embarked on a stunning late run to win the Scottish Premiership title - Philippe Clement's men won the first silverware of the season in the League Cup. No team outside of Glasgow has won the league title since Aberdeen in 1985 and, unsurprisingly, the Old Firm dominate the most valuable players currently playing in Scotland. Transfermarkt released the latest Scottish Premiership market value update on Thursday with 300 players having their valuations altered and Celtic's dominance was reflected.
Who are the most valuable Celtic and Rangers players
Celtic’s squad has the highest market value in Scotland at €125 million after a rise of 7.6 percent in the latest update. Rangers, however, seen their total squad value drop by 5.2 percent to €103.2m. As illustrated in the graphic above, Celtic have seven players in the top ten most valuable players in the Scottish top-flight with Rangers having three. Matt O'Riley enjoyed a stunning season and his market value rose by €7m to become the most valuable player in Scottish Premiership history at €20m - eclipsing former Rangers star Ryan Kent (€18.5m). Of the three Rangers players in the top ten, Todd Cantwell is the only player to be contracted at the club for next season with Fabio Silva and Abdallah Sima to return to their parent clubs after their loans.
Combined Celtic and Rangers XI
Formulating a combined XI from Celtic and Rangers will always prove controversial given the fierce rivalry between the teams. It’s arguably the biggest derby in the United Kingdom but based purely on Transfermarkt’s market values, six Celtic players and five Rangers stars make the combined eleven. Jack Butland has been a revelation since moving north and he eclipses fellow former England international goalkeeper Joe Hart. While James Tavernier became the top scoring British defender in history last season, Celtic’s Alistair Johnston (€8m) is valued €2m higher than the Rangers captain due to the age differential. Cameron Carter-Vickers and Connor Goldson form the centre-back partnership with Greg Taylor at left-back.
In the 4-4-2 formation, Celtic’s prized assets O’Riley and Reo Hatate take the two central midfield roles while Rangers occupy the winger positions. Todd Cantwell (€8.5m) features on left and teammate Abdallah Sima is on the right flank after a €0.5m rise in our May update. Kyogo and Silva form a striker partnership valued at €25m despite Silva's valuation falling by €2m.
